Art Spotlight - Essays in Philosophy

Like much of Van Gogh's work, the innocuous subject-
matter The Novel Reader  the belies the conviction with which Van Gogh produced it in 1888. As the name suggests, the book is a novel, and as such -- by the standards of the time -- unfit to be read by a woman. Van Gogh thought differently, as he was himself an avid reader, and created this work, in part, to enshrine the value of the written word to humanity as a whole.
