                 Art Spotlight - International Affairs

Though Claude Monet is perhaps most well known for his ability to transfer onto the canvas the majesty and splendour of the visual experience of light, in Ships Riding on the Seine at Roune, painted in 1873, Monet presents us with a serene view of two tall ships -- their sails matching the verticality of the church spires behind. The taciturn simplicity invites one to ponder on the purpose of the ships; trade, war, diplomacy?
